According to a statistic that we’re totally making up, but are still certain is accurate, 80% of all videos on YouTube are created strictly for wasting time. Oh they can be highly entertaining, that’s true. But if your boss walked in and saw you watching the trailer to the next summer blockbuster at your desk, it would probably result in a very stern talk that has nothing to do with whether or not Independence Day 2 will be good.
There are plenty of helpful and informative videos, sure. You can learn how to tie a tie, sit in on an economic lecture discussing demand and supply, or get a lesson in the art of tablemaking.
But then there are the videos of news anchors singing classic rap songs, adorable dachshunds playing street hockey, and Brad Pitt in a 1980s Pringles commercial. (Go ahead and click those if you must… we’ll be here when you get back.)
It’s such an epidemic that there’s even a website dedicated to calculating exactly how much time has been wasted on any YouTube video. And if anyone’s wondering, humanity has wasted a collective 9,778 years watching Justin Bieber’s music video “Baby.” So just let that simmer a minute.
With that being said, we think if we’re going to publish a list of YouTube videos, you better believe we’re going to make them a productive use of your time. So today, we’re going to show you the best HIIT videos we can find on the infamous video sharing site.
WHAT IS HIIT?
High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, is a way to maximize your time working out by performing multiple, high-intensity exercises at once. By using short bursts of intense exertion followed by little to no rest during an exercise session, you allow yourself to get the most out of your workouts.
It’s a type of training used by elite athletes from around the world, and this once well-kept secret is now out and ready to help you get the results you’re looking for. And it’s all done with nothing but your own body.
SHORTER WORKOUTS TO ACHIEVE THE SAME RESULTS
As we mentioned, HIIT High-Intensity Interval Training for Women: Burn More Fat in Less Time with HIIT Workouts You Can Do Anywhere New Price: $14.93 Old Price: $17.95You Save: $3.02 (as of 11/18/2017 08:24 UTC) uses short bursts of exertion followed with very little to no rest. And by doing this, we can compact our workouts into a shorter timeframe, while still achieving the same results as we would spending at least twice that time doing workouts at a moderate speed.
This way, you’ll know you’ve gotten a great workout (trust us, you will be tired) and you won’t feel the need to stay in a gym for hours.
Now, this may come as a shock to some of you, but in order to build up your cardiovascular strength, you do not need to spend long periods of time on a treadmill, exhaustingly cursing the world and all those who dwell within it.
Instead, HIIT workouts will provide the same benefits as long running sessions will. They increase your metabolism, provide an improved ability for your muscles to recover, and give you a healthier blood pressure — all of which can accelerate weight loss.
So with this we have to debunk a couple myths:
- A lot of people believe you can’t build muscle and lose weight with the same program.
- Those people also think all exercise (besides cardio) builds muscle.
Both of these are simply not true. You can absolutely build muscle while shedding unwanted fat. And even programs that are designed to build muscle often don’t deliver. But with Interval Training HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training Explained New Price: $10.86 Old Price: $11.59You Save: $0.73 (as of 11/18/2017 08:24 UTC) , you’re going to get those cut, toned muscles you’ve been wanting all your life.
Strength Training is a great way to build your muscles so that they are lean and mean.
As always, we want you to exercise caution when performing any exercise, but that especially goes for workouts as intense as HIIT. They are designed for you to push yourself as far as you can go, so make sure you’re properly stretched (some of the following workouts do include warm-ups and cool downs) and hydrated.
6) TRAIN INSANE HIIT WORKOUT BY BLOGILATES
Now if you’re a beginner, this is a great place to start. It’s seven beginner-style workouts for 50 seconds each, with a 10-seconds each. Just one cycle of the exercises can be a great end to a workout, but if it’s your only workout of the day, try completing four total cycles.
5) 20-MINUTE LADDER HIIT WORKOUT BY FITNESSBLENDER
This video be a very humbling experience if you still don’t think you can get a great workout in a short period of time. This is brought to us by FitnessBlender and incorporates everything from burpees to high knees to jumping jacks. Oh, and there’s a little bit of rest, too. Not too much, though.
4) 10-MINUTE BODYWEIGHT HIIT WORKOUT BY LIVE LEAN TV
This 10-minute routine from Live Lean TV is great, whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced HIIT athlete. Why? Because they have a helpful guide that dictates how long you work and how long you rest, based on your level. For example, the intermediate athlete will work for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds.
Also as a nice little bonus, this video was shot in Central Park and you can hear birds chirping, so crank the volume for a nice little distraction while you’re begging for the workout to finish.
3) 20-MINUTE BIKINI HIIT WORKOUT BY POPSUGAR FITNESS
Here’s one for the ladies looking for that awesome bikini body (though men would benefit greatly from it was well). This one is a little less strenuous, so it can be great for beginners. It’s a twenty-minute workout where you push hard for 40 seconds and rest for 20.
2) BRUTAL HIIT WORKOUT BY FITNESSBLENDER
Another installment by FitnessBlender, this one is most certainly not for the feint-hearted. It’s called “Brutal” for a reason and it’s one of the longest HIIT workouts out there, and we really wouldn’t recommend one be any longer unless you are highly advanced in calisthenics Complete Calisthenics: The Ultimate Guide to Bodyweight Training New Price: $16.39 Old Price: $29.99You Save: $13.60 (as of 11/18/2017 08:24 UTC) . The good news is, the format is 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, so you’ll break frequently. But as you get toward the end of the workout, that rest starts to feel pretty hasty.
1) TABATA HIIT CARDIO BY BRANDON TURNER
What is Tabata 40 Tabata Tracks - High Intensity Interval Training (20 Second Work and 10 Second Rest Cycles) New Price: $8.99 Old Price: $8.99 (as of 11/18/2017 08:24 UTC) , you may be asking? Well, it’s a HIIT workout that is designed to last for four minutes. That makes it perfect to place at the end of your workout in order to make sure every last bit of energy of yours is spent. And if you watch this video and see how exhausted these athletes are, you’ll know it will be.
Give these a try (just not all at once) and let us know which is your favorite. And if there’s a good one you’ve seen that didn’t make our list, tell us about it in the comments!
Great workout today, everyone! Now we can go back to watching the other stuff on YouTube we all love. Here, we’ll even get you started.
